Korea University International Summer Campus

June 28th – August 5th, 2010

Korea University, one of leading universities in Korea and a major sponsor of the IKAA Gathering 2010, has realized their vision of an International Summer Campus and is launching the Pre-College Campus Program (2010 will mark their inaugural program), designed for high school graduates to gain valuable experiences with international campus life and an academic advantage through specially tailored pre-college courses.

Eligibility: Domestic/Overseas high school graduates admitted to an overseas university (Separate assessment will be made to select outstanding current high school students)

Program Dates: Monday, June 28 – Thursday, August 5, 2010 (Classes meet four days a week: Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs)

Fees: Tuition KRW 3,500,000 (Application Fee KRW 100,000)

How to Apply: Visit ISC website (http://isc.korea.ac.kr), click on “KU Pre-College” and complete the application form

Core Courses: Writing and Presentation Skills (required), Literature Humanities, Culture and Human Behavior, Understanding of Science (students choose one of the remaining three core courses)

Elective Courses: Introduction to Microeconomics, Statistics, Introduction to Management, Introduction to Marketing, World History, Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Psychology, Introduction to Sociology, Calculus I, General Chemistry I, Introduction to American Politics, Contemporary Korean Society

In addition to the regular course schedules, students will have unique opportunities available to them, including:

Attending special lectures presented by students and renowned scholars from prestigious universities from around the world
The possibility of an internship with public corporations, large enterprises, or educational institutions, presenting students with the chance to experience Korean corporate culture and business practices
Weekend Day Trips: Possibilities include ROK Marine Corps Camp, DMZ, Folk Village, Hanok Village, B-Boy, Nanta, Jump

Korean American adoptee and comedian, Amy Anderson, is coming back to Seattle at The Comedy Underground! Amy was here in town last August, and AAAW had a great group of people go to her show. If you weren’t able to make the show last time, you have an opportunity again to see her, and if you did go to the show in August, you know just how hilarious Amy is.

Amy is a national headliner of clubs and colleges, and she’s thrilled to bring her unique and edgy humor to Seattle again. In addition to nationally-recognized performances on television, Amy has also performed at many Korean adult adoptee events, including the 2006 GOA’L Conference and the 2008 IKAA Mini-Gathering in Las Vegas.

Amy is performing on two nights (June 17 & 18) – folks from AAAW will be going her show on FRIDAY, JUNE 18 @ 8:30 PM.

March 20 – Birth Search Info Session

On Saturday, March 20th, AAAW will host a Birth Search Info Session open to any adult adoptees who are thinking about beginning – or are currently in the process of – a search for members of their birth family. This session will include a brief presentation covering questions to ask yourself before beginning a search, an outline of steps to take during a search, and preparing for a variety of search outcomes. Following the presentation, some of the presenters will share their personal experiences with birth search. There will also be some time allotted for Q&A and discussion.

(Note – the information and experiences presented will be specific to Korean birth family search, but adult adoptees from all backgrounds are welcome to attend.)

FREE FOOD, FUN, & INFORMATION ABOUT THE IKAA GATHERING 2010!!!

On Saturday evening February 27^th, 2010, come join us at the historic Panama Tea House in Seattle’s International District at 5 PM for some free food, tea & coffee, and helpful information about this summer’s IKAA Gathering 2010 in Seoul, Korea!

The Panama Tea House is located at 605 South Main Street, Seattle, WA 98104. We’ll provide you with teas, coffees, and plenty of pastries (scones, cookies, etc) AND give you all the current information on this summer’s IKAA Gathering – updated information on the expected costs, the current schedule, discounted flight information, booking your hotel room at a price you can’t get anywhere else, a post-Gathering tour itinerary and cost, and much more! IKAA Gathering 2010

The IKAA Gathering 2010 will take place August 3 – 8, 2010 in Seoul, Korea at the Lotte Hotel Seoul. Join AAAW and over 700 other Korean adult adoptees at this incredible event! This will mark the third such Gathering in Korea for adoptees, following the Gatherings in 2004 and 2007.

Korean Cooking Demonstration & Lesson!

Please join us for the first AAAW event of 2010! This is a great opportunity to learn the basics of what every Korean kitchen should have on hand as well as to learn how to make a few dishes, including doenjang jigae (bean paste stew), kalbi jjim (beef short rib stew), and various jeon (fried pancakes) & other panchan (side dishes). This lesson will be simple but will go beyond the typical Korean dishes (bulgogi, kimbap, kimchi, etc.)! After the cooking lesson, we will all enjoy the fruits of our labor by enjoying a delicious meal together.

Our instructor is Skye Lee, a Korean woman who grew up in Canada who is also a friend & supporter of AAAW. She works in finance by day but loves to cook & entertain when she has the opportunity. She has graciously invited AAAW members to her home in order to share her wealth of knowledge in making Korean cuisine.
